Starting a freelance business can feel like standing at the edge of a deep pool, wondering how to dive in or if you even should. But guess what? You can launch your freelance business, gain traction, and become booked out in just 90 days just like I did. You probably wonder how I landed 10 clients in just three months of starting my freelance business, some of whom I still work with today. Let’s chat about how you can make this happen (no fluff, just real talk).
In this blog, I’ll share the exact strategies I used to launch my business from scratch in 2021 – first as a virtual assistant and now as a full-stack designer. These strategies are applicable to any service-based business, so stick around to learn how to attract and retain clients for the long haul.
The New Year always brings a wave of fresh ideas and innovations, and this blog is one of the exciting new strategies I’ve implemented at the DWD Studio.
My goal is to empower aspiring freelancers by sharing valuable insights and practical tips for launching and scaling their businesses. Think of it as a written extension of my YouTube channel – perfect for those who prefer to absorb information through reading.
I’m confident you’ll find this blog incredibly helpful on your freelance journey. Now back to today’s topic!
- First and foremost, define your niche and identify your ideal client.
What excites you? What are you passionate about and skilled at? This could be the foundation of your freelance business. For example, if you’re transitioning from a 9-to-5 job, consider what skills you possess that are highly marketable.
Who is your ideal client? Be specific! Are you a social media manager for beauty brands? A graphic designer specializing in solopreneurs? The more targeted your ideal client, the easier it will be to reach them.
For example, I started my freelance journey as a virtual assistant. I quickly realized my design skills were in high demand, so I began offering social media templates and designs alongside my VA services. Eventually, I transitioned into full-stack design.
By clearly defining your niche, skills, and ideal client, you can create a targeted approach to attracting and serving your dream clients

- Create a portfolio that pops! If you’re just starting, create a mock portfolio to showcase your skills effectively.
When I first began, I designed a stunning portfolio template on Canva and shared it with potential clients. This strategy helped me secure 10 clients within my first three months. Instead of just telling clients about my abilities, I demonstrated them.
You can showcase your portfolio on platforms like Behance or Dribbble, or create a clean simple website using free tools like Canva. You can even purchase a domain name and connect it to your portfolio to stand out as more professional.
Not having design skills to create one isn’t an excuse because I’ve created a user-friendly template that you can easily customize. Simply click this link to get yours, add your brand colors and other relevant details, and you’re good to go!
- Nail your branding and online presence! Your branding is more than just a logo; it’s the entire experience people have when they interact with you and your business. As freelancers, we’re essentially selling our personal brands. We’re selling the experience of working with us.
Think of your branding as a powerful tool that differentiates you from the countless other freelancers out there. It communicates why someone should choose to work with you specifically, even if others might possess similar skills.
Ensure your social media, website, and all client touchpoints consistently reflect your brand identity. This includes using consistent brand colors, fonts, and imagery that truly represent your unique personality and style. This is how you build a strong brand and attract clients who resonate with you.
- Hustle smarter not harder! When I launched my freelance business, I began by tapping into my immediate network – friends, family, and acquaintances. I informed them about my new venture and the services I offered. This approach had several benefits including:
Testing the waters: Working with people I knew allowed me to test the viability of my business idea and ensure I truly enjoyed the work.
Building a portfolio: I could offer my services at a reduced rate or even pro bono, which helped me build a strong portfolio to showcase to future clients.
Gaining valuable referrals: Satisfied clients within my network often referred me to others, expanding my reach.
Don’t hesitate to share your entrepreneurial journey! Let your friends, family, and social media connections know about your new business. Share updates on platforms like WhatsApp, LinkedIn, and Instagram to build awareness and attract potential clients. Remember, ‘a closed mouth doesn’t get fed.
- Wow every client! My secret sauce to consistent client bookings is simple: consistently exceed expectations. When you under-promise and over-deliver, your clients will turn into your best marketers. This strategy works wonders. You’ll be amazed at the positive reviews you’ll receive on platforms like Google My Business and the incredible word-of-mouth referrals that will follow.
I’ve personally experienced the power of this approach. Word-of-mouth referrals are incredibly valuable. They boost your credibility and attract new clients more effectively than any paid advertising campaign.
Remember, consistently under-promise and significantly over-deliver on every project to build a loyal client base and achieve long-term success in your freelance business.
- Keep Learning! Stay ahead by investing in yourself. Whether it’s a quick course, joining a freelancer community, or reading blogs like this one (wink!), leveling up your skills will keep you competitive.
Early in my freelance journey, I adopted a simple yet powerful mantra: ‘If I don’t know, I’ll learn.’
Whenever a client presented a task I wasn’t immediately familiar with, I was honest about my knowledge gap. However, I always followed that honesty with a commitment to learning.
I dedicated myself to continuous learning by watching YouTube tutorials, reading industry blogs, and enrolling in relevant courses. This commitment to lifelong learning has been crucial in my growth and ability to consistently improve my skills and stay ahead of the curve.
